Confirmation in the Lutheran Church has always
been intended as a stepping stone in the faith
lives of our youth as they mature into adult
Christians. It is a time of learning and
questioning, a time of applying the ideas and
concepts of our faith to the reality we live in, and
a time of relating to others who walk beside us in
faith.
Most of all, it is to be a time of spiritual growth.
About Confirmation
Confirmation at Good Shepherd
Students at Good Shepherd participate in Confirmation starting in the fall when they enter 7th
grade and continuing until the fall of their 10th grade year. It's basically a 3 year program with a
little space thrown in. 9th graders get the Spring of the year off (starting at Easter) in
"exchange" for the two months in the fall of their 10th grade year. Confirmation Day is on
Reformation Sunday which is typically (read: always) the last Sunday of the month of October.
We don't put much emphasis on requirements (choosing instead to focus on the students
experiencing worship, service, learning, fellowship, and fun together as God's church) but we
do have some. During their three years students:
- Complete 30 Worship Notes
- Complete 30 hours of service.
- Know a few key Bible verses.
- Understand and be able to talk about these key ideas (listed below).
- Know the meanings of these key terms (listed below).
In all of our teaching we emphasize not just the "what" but also the "why".
1. Commitment to Christ.
2. Knowledge of Christian Teachings.
3. Friendships with adults and youth within the church.
4. Maturity of Faith.
5. Incorporation into the Church.

1. Encourage and pray for your child. Ask questions, share answers & doubts, and be a good
role model.
2. Volunteer to help with various Confirmation events. Every parent is asked to be a Youth
Room Host at least once a year. Host guidelines and responsibilities are outlined here.
3. Talk with your pastor, youth director, and child's small group guide about your child.
We're here to help you fulfill the promise you made over your child at their baptism.
4. Attend church regularly with your child. Make time for faith in a daily way through table
prayers, family devotions, and discussion. No one will have a greater impact on your child's
faith than you.
